Ep. 453: Dying Wisdom—7 Lessons to Live By

Profound Lessons the Dying Can Teach Us about Living

Many of us find out (too late) that what we think is important, actually isn’t at all. Don’t wait to examine your priorities to find out whether you need to make some changes.

Part of living a fulfilling and meaningful life is frequently evaluating what we value most. If we don’t, we may wake up one day to find that we too often prioritized things that didn’t matter at all. Luke was reminded of this recently when he and his wife had their second child. It caused him to think about an article he had read about the regrets people have as they approach the end of their lives.

The article is “7 Critical Life Lessons We Can Learn from the Dying” by Matthew Royse. In this Silver Dollar episode, we discuss these lessons—what they are, what they mean for a fulfilling life, and how you can put them into practice.

It’s important to consider the impact of these lessons on our priorities and overall well-being. For example, we may value our career, but is it costing us valuable time that we could be spending with our families? Is our commitment to work creating excessive stress, burnout, or health problems?

Making changes to our priorities may be difficult, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. It can lead to a sense of purpose and fulfillment—without which many find life empty. By focusing on what truly matters to us, we can live a more meaningful and satisfying life.

Unfortunately, as Royse’s article demonstrates, many of us wait too long to examine our priorities. We get caught up in the day-to-day grind of life and fail to take a step back and evaluate what we’re devoting our time and energy to and at what cost. We may only realize the importance of close relationships, gratitude, forgiveness, and other values when it is too late.

We encourage you to reflect on your values and goals. Talk with friends, family members, a spiritual advisor, or someone else whose advice you trust. Whatever you do to center yourself, take the time to do it now—don’t wait.

We hope you enjoy this episode, and we’d appreciate it if you took a moment to leave us a 5-star review and comment on Apple Podcasts. (We read them on air!) Thanks for listening!
