Grow On TikTok with These Clever Tips
Who should listen: Whether you’re new to TikTok or a veteran user, these tips will help grow your TikTok account for free.
Key idea: If you do only one thing on TikTok, it should be to post consistently.
This week, we’re sharing what we’ve learned in the short time that we’ve been posting to TikTok. It’s not that we’ve discovered any kind of secret sauce, but what we’re doing is working really well, so we wanted to pass along some tips we’ve picked up along the way.
And when we say really well, we’re talking about capturing 50K followers in about five months!
That’s not to say every video we post goes viral (although we’ve had one or two hit more than a million views). But this kind of growth is pretty impressive, so we’re doing something right.
If you haven’t already implemented some of the tips we suggest below, give them a try. We’re confident you’ll start to see some improvement in your numbers too.
1. Consume content
To succeed on TikTok, you need to pay attention to the type of content that is doing well on the platform.
Aside from trending content, there are sounds, text formats, and audio. See what is getting a hefty amount of engagement, and then look at those videos through the eyes of a marketer or content creator.

2. Post consistently
If you’ve been listening to Stay Paid for any length of time, then you know that being consistent is probably the most important thing you can do for ALL your marketing efforts. Posting to social media, and TikTok in particular, is no different.
It would be great if you could post four or more times a day, but not many working professionals have the time to do that. (Keep reading for how to get the most out of the time you do have.) We’ve been posting once a day, every day, and it’s working for us. We’re getting followers, likes, and engagement.
3. Use topics trending outside the platform
Two of our most popular videos made references to current events.
The first made reference to Tom Cruise and his newest movie, Maverick. The second referred to Johnny Depp, who, at the time, was embroiled in a legal battle with Amber Heard. The key to both videos’ success was our ability to capture attention using topics that were popular at the time and making a link between them and our primary message.
4. Use hooks
TikTok’s algorithm favors videos with longer watch times, so don’t hesitate to use the most obvious hooks if it will keep viewers watching until the end.
Unabashedly use hooks that you’ve seen work with other TikTok videos; there’s no need to reinvent the wheel. In fact, we give you several hooks to try, plus a cool hack that will give you those precious few extra seconds of viewing.
Just be sure to deliver the payoff.
5. Niche down
To help with content creation, you can always take a trending topic and niche it down to your market.
For example, if you are a real estate agent and the trending topic is the current housing market, you could create a series of quick videos in one session (it’s called batching and will save you time) about:
- What does the potential market crash mean to first-time homebuyers?
- What does the potential market crash mean to luxury home sellers?
- What does the potential market crash mean to retirees?
- What does the potential market crash mean to [fill in the blank]?
In this part of the episode we also talk about selecting hashtags that align with your niche and tracking how your audio is being shared.
6. Stick with it
It makes sense for us to try to post viral videos because we’re trying to reach as many people as possible with our videos. But going viral is only one of many possible goals you can have for your account. Still, if going big is your dream, then realize that among your peaks there will be valleys.
Views of our TikTok videos started in the teens. When one video garnered 2,000 views, we were over the moon! But then the numbers started to slide. A couple of posts later, we grabbed our first 1M views! Then we slid back down again.
The point is, the number of views you get will go up and down. Just because you hit a high number with one video doesn’t mean everything after that needs to perform just as well. If you stick with it and implement the tips we’ve discussed, you will gather a loyal following.
