There’s More to Life

For the past few weeks, it seems as if our country has taken multiple blows from Mother Nature—almost like she has enjoyed pummeling us while we’re down. Although I was states away from Hurricane Harvey and Irma’s destruction, and across the country from the forest fires out West, the sheer devastation has struck a chord.

Most importantly, it’s made me realize the sheer fragility in life.

It’s so easy to get wrapped up in our day-to-day agenda. During the work week, we rise before the sun comes up, consume more than the daily recommended amount of caffeine, and head into the office for the day. Whether you spend the majority of the day catching up on e-mails or sitting in seemingly endless meetings, one thing is the same—we’re pushing ourselves to the limit to get ahead. How can we not? The hustle is alive. We live in a society that thrives on making it to the top. From reality television that depicts entrepreneurship to countless self-help books with tips to make it to the top, the media practically fuels the fire.

Of course, there is absolutely no shame in working hard. In fact, I too believe that a certain amount of dedication is needed in life. We just need to take a moment to breathe. To stop what we’re doing for a few seconds, and enjoy the little things. Whether it’s heading home early to spend time with your significant other or skipping a networking event because you’re simply tired—just press pause. The work will be there tomorrow, and in the grand scheme of life, it’s trivial.

The next time you’re feeling overwhelmed and bogged down at work, take a second to appreciate the bigger picture. You’re fortunate to have the ability to work towards a goal, and at the end of the day, that should be enough.
