Nowadays there seems to be a mad rush for businesses to be active on every social media platform. We’ve heard that being social is the key to building a rapport with your current and potential customers, so it’s become a part of our every day life. However, have you ever wondered if there’s a thing as being ‘too social?’

Just like everything else in life, there’s a line that has to be drawn. Take the time to review these three tidbits, and if you find yourself under performing on any of them, then you may be too social for your own good.

  1. Authenticity.
Unfortunately it’s way too easy to be fake on social media. The temptation to adopt a façade, and hide behind it is overwhelmingly present. However, it’s imperative that you’re nothing but authentic. Being authentic is the only way to ensure that you don’t run out of content. Sharing behind-the-scenes snippets of your workday and weekend activities will come a lot more naturally than repurposing industry articles that you’re either unfamiliar with or aren’t 100 percent passionate about. Nobody is perfect, and a genuine voice will resonate with your audience more so in the long run.
  2. The right platform.
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn—the options for platforms to utilize can seem endless. Many people think that downloading an automation application to mass post on every platform is the way to go. But, being active on multiple platforms doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll garner more engagement. It’s best to pick one or two where your audience really lives, and utilize them to their full extent. For instance, if you’re in real estate and have gorgeous photography, consider utilizing Instagram to highlight listings. While, a Facebook Business page is beneficial for maintaining customer service and engagement.
  3. Valuable content.
In the end, it always goes back to the type of content that you’re producing. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again, valuable content makes a world of difference. If you’re not posting the type of content that your audience wants to see, they’re more likely to tune you out. It may take a while to determine the type of content that appeals to your audience—with trial and error—but once you do, you’ll begin to develop a winning social media presence

Done correctly, social media can add that layer of human interaction that your business needs. But, it’s important to be mindful of your presence and pull in the reigns if find yourself becoming disingenuous.
