Ep. 480: How to Keep Talent without Big Money

He’s Retaining Talent by Helping His Agents Live the Life They Want

The key to keeping talent is to provide people with a means to achieve their vision of success.

Jason Martin’s team in Washington, DC, has been named one of the best real estate teams in the country by the Wall Street Journal. So among questions about what he’s doing to generate leads and a conversation about what makes Michael Jordan and other great achievers different from most people, we naturally had to ask him how he attracts and retains top talent for his agency.

You might imagine that Jason’s answer included a list of benefits and amenities, such as state-of-the-art systems and attractive commission splits. While we’re sure that’s part of what he offers, Jason highlighted a different type of consideration: “If I can give them value, they tend to stick around.”

One man’s junk is another man’s treasure

Because value is subjective, Jason needs to understand what each of his agents wants out of life. Only then can he provide them with a means to achieve it. However, what each agent wants will be different and likely not what Jason would want for them—and there’s the rub.

What do you do when the people who work for you don’t share your vision of success?

You’ll find at least one answer to this vexing question in Jason’s interview.

We hope you enjoy this episode and act on the advice Luke offers at the end. We’d also appreciate it if you took a moment to leave us a 5-star review and comment on Apple Podcasts. (We read them on air!) Thanks for listening!
