Ep. 473: 3 Truths Everyone Should Live By

Patience. Courage. Association.

When taken to heart the principles of exercising patience, having the courage to admit you’ve failed, and being careful about who you associate with will lead you to breakthroughs that will change your life.

This week on Stay Paid, we’re taking the time to examine a few thoughts—we call them truths—that have the power to make you reconsider the way you think about fortune and failure. Taken to heart, these three truths will encourage you to take positive actions that are guaranteed to create breakthroughs in both your business and personal life.

Truth #1: The grass is greener not on the other side but wherever you water it.

Life has its ups and downs. This isn’t intended to be a platitude as much as a statement about reality. We all experience times when things are going smoothly but then, for no apparent reason, there’s a bump in the road causing us to experience a slump or begin to doubt ourselves. It’s at that point where many people give up, change course, and pursue another way.

If you are too quick to quit, stop! Every decision will produce pros and cons. The key is to be patient, disciplined, and stick with your plan. Time is an essential component of every success, and people lacking patience don’t give themselves enough of it. Water the grass—nurture your ideas, fix what’s broken, and stay the course—and you will find success.

Truth #2: Any failure can be overcome if you have the courage to admit you’ve failed.

Sidestepping, ignoring, or covering up failures only serves to give them power over you because doing so causes you to lose your personal integrity. It’s better to own your mistakes and make them right than to make excuses.

Admitting that things did not go the way you planned takes courage as it requires us to admit we don’t have full control. But accepting you’re fallible proves you’re human—and people respond favorably to authenticity. Always strive to be secure in yourself—it’s far easier to be real than to prop up a persona.

Truth #3: To achieve your best self, you need to surround yourself with the best people.

Have you heard the expression “Show me your friends, and I’ll tell you who you are?” It comes from the truth that your environment, including the people you associate with, either helps you to thrive or not. To reach your potential, whether it is in business or your personal life, you may need to fire people—employees, mentors, or even friends—who don’t nurture the best in you.

In business, your ego can get in the way of letting a bad hire go. Firing someone might mean you made a bad decision or didn’t train them well (making it your fault that it didn’t work out). The truth is, you’ll never be able to fully vet a potential employee after only a few interviews. Be willing and able to fire fast.
