Key idea: Many people enjoy basking in the light of their hard-won achievements, but there are others who are keenly aware of the downsides to success and fear its implications. Fortunately, there are ways to alleviate this anxiety and move forward.

It may seem odd that people can be afraid of success, but when you think about it—especially in light of psychology and human development—it makes sense.

Success inevitably requires change, and accepting change can be difficult for a lot of people. The same is true of growth. Where there is growth, there are unavoidable and sometimes frightening changes—whether it’s in the form of personal development, a career promotion, or business success.

Even for the best of us, change and growth are hard. The human brain is always looking for ways to maintain the status quo; we’re most comfortable with what’s familiar to us. So it’s understandable why some people resist their own achievements.
