Ep. 36: How to Build Your Email Marketing List

Many assume that email is dead, but we’re here to prove otherwise! Think about this: your email list—if built properly—may be the one marketing source that is truly yours to own. And even with all of the new ways we have to generate leads in sales today, email is still the king of marketing ROI with an average 4400% return on investment. That means that for every dollar spent on your email, you should earn $44.

But your email list is a constantly moving target. People are going to unsubscribe, addresses will go out of date, and you’ll naturally start to lose people from lack of engagement. That’s why continuously building your email list is so important.

In today’s episode of Stay Paid, Josh and Luke examine various ways to build and maintain your email marketing list to ensure that you maximize your efforts.

Key Points

  • The importance of building your email list
  • Why adding value to your content can increase engagement rates
  • How to grow your list with in-person and online tactics

Different List Building Tactics

In-person

Believe it or not, collecting email addresses in-person is possible. Especially if you utilize one thing that you’re bound to have in your possession at all times—your phone. Whether you’re an Apple or Android user, your contact section gives you a place to enter someone’s email address with their phone number—a relatively simple feat.

Another idea is to feature your email list subscription on your impression pieces—business cards, ebooks, brochures, etc. Make sure that you include how they can subscribe to your list. While they’ll have to sign up online, making this effort in-person will pay off in the long run.

Lastly, we can’t stress the importance of actually emailing those people who sign in on your email sheet. Whether it’s at an open house or seminar, these people willingly handed over their contact information for a reason. Add them to your database, and continue to send them valuable content.

Online

When it comes to online marketing, lead magnets are incredibly valuable. Utilizing them will help you build your email list tenfold. First, you’ll want to make sure that your lead magnet is relevant and offers something of value to your audience. Next, set up a Facebook-boosted post at $5 a day, and run the ad for ten days. In order for someone to receive your lead magnet, they have to enter their email address. Meaning that every person has opted in for your content with genuine email addresses, providing you with an ideal target audience.

Ah, LinkedIn. As sales-based professionals, we all understand the importance of utilizing this networking platform. And there’s a great hack to help you build your list. You can download an Excel spreadsheet of your connections’ contact information—name, title, and email address. Once you have their information, you can then add it to your database.

It’s crucial to make sure that your website’s landing page is optimized to capture email addresses. The only thing that a visitor should be able to do on your landing page is enter their email address to receive their desired item of value. You should also only have one call to action on the page. While this can be challenging to do, it’s necessary in order to drive the transaction.

Another online tactic is to include a link in your email signature where recipients can sign up for your email newsletter. It’s a quick and easy way to build your list with people who actually want to receive your content.
