Are you having a hard time staying motivated? You’re not alone. Statistically, the middle of February is when most New Year’s resolutions fail. Today on Above the Noise, our Brand Content Manager Jessi Carlin offers three tips for staying on track to achieve your goals.
Video Transcript
At the beginning of this year, I showed you three ways to set your goals and actually hold yourself accountable for them. Now we’re in mid-February, which is when most people’s New Year’s resolutions start to fail. So, today, I’m checking in, and I’m going to show you how to get through that February slide and stay on track to crush your goals this year.
Tip #1 – Know Your Why
When you’re working towards goals that are mostly numbers, it can be tough to see the big picture, so do something to remind yourself of what you’re really working toward. If you’re looking to earn more money to buy a house, send your kids to school, or take a really nice vacation, try putting up pictures of those things somewhere in your work space. It’s a lot easier to keep yourself motivated when you have a visible reminder of what you’re really working towards.
Tip #2 – Break It Down
If you watched our previous video about setting goals, you probably remember that we asked you to check in periodically and evaluate how you were doing. So, here we are! But now, when you look at those year-end goals, some of them might seem so far away. And you might even feel a little discouraged. The good news is now you’ve got a better idea of the tasks you need to be doing regularly, so you can focus on breaking those bigger goals down into smaller, more manageable pieces. Have a checklist of things you need to do each month, week, and day, and then physically cross those items off your list as you get them done. You’ll feel more accomplished as you see yourself making progress towards your larger goals.
Tip #3 – Celebrate Your Wins
Even when you’re making progress toward that bigger goal—and you have a clearer idea of what’s waiting for you down the line—it can sometimes be tough to keep going when your reward seems so far off. So, find other smaller rewards that you can work towards in the meantime. That nice pair of shoes, or that new video game you’ve had your eye on? Treat yourself! But only when you’ve hit your sales numbers for the month. Those rewards don’t have to be material things, either. It might be a night of binge watching your favorite TV show or sleeping in an extra hour on the weekend. The key is to celebrate your wins along the way. That way, you’ll learn to associate all your hard work with feeling good, and those occasional slumps will be easier to get out of.
