Ep. 497: The Skill Set That Transforms Businesses and Lives
How to (Actually) Get More Done:
The Secret to Real Productivity
Genuine productivity comes from maintaining a disciplined focus on a limited number of top priorities.
Doing more will not make you more productive. In fact, the more balls you have in the air, the less productive you will be, and that, inevitably, will adversely affect your business’s bottom line. Trust us—we found out the hard way.
Year over year, our company’s growth dropped by about 11% because we tried to implement too many initiative at one time. Our lack of focus stretched our limited resources, and despite working to capacity, we missed our goal. The failure boils down to some simple math: with four equal priorities, each only received 25% of our attention, and that cost us money.
Contrary to what many believe, multitasking doesn’t make you more productive, and having multiple priorities will hamper your ability to achieve any of them. This isn’t just our opinion—the University of Michigan, the University of California at Irvine, the American Psychological Association, and Harvard Business Review all have reported on the detrimental effects trying to do it all has on one’s emotional well-being and on businesses.
In this Silver Dollar episode of Stay Paid, we discuss the benefits of implementing a disciplined approach to your business goals, breaking down why it can be difficult to stick to a plan and sharing some words of wisdom from Warren Buffett to help you stay the course. We also review research that unequivocally proves multitasking and interruptions decrease not just our productivity but also our IQ.
We hope you enjoy this episode and act on the advice Luke offers at the end. We’d also appreciate it if you took a moment to leave us a 5-star review and comment on Apple Podcasts. (We read them on air!) Thanks for listening!
