The Benefits of a Gimmick

The gimmick is as old as sales itself. The reason that gimmicks get such a bad rap is probably because they are viewed, at best, as irrelevant to the business. At worst, they can be deceitful.

But there are certain gimmicks that are tasteful, a bit cheesy, and lovable. Most importantly, they attract the right kind of attention, the kind that results in revenue.

The best course of action is to make your gimmick personal. Some agents sit down for a few hours a week and bust out handwritten notes at a factory pace. You can build a whole brand around that kind of tactic, creating an image of classic service and personal rapport. Or you can integrate a hobby that you are passionate about into your advertising.

Joshua Smith, host of the GSD podcast, took his business to the next level by distributing door hangers around his geographic farm. Might not seem like much of a signature move, but Josh owned it, and worked the process hard. That year, he earned 463 listings.

Topher Ingalls, a retired motocross rider turned real estate agent, integrates his passion into his career. His introductory video feature him ramping over the highway on a dirt bike in a pair of khakis on the way to the office.

Michael Meier shoots listing videos and using models to pose as residents. This tactic adds a whole new dimension to the videos. Instead of just panning around from room to room, the apartments and lofts come to life as beautiful people effortlessly move through their glamourous routines.

Whatever gimmick you settle on, make it your own. Having a stand out characteristic or trademark can work wonders for your marketing. It can also be a way for you to make your business align further with your passion, which will only make you better at what you do.
