What’s up everybody my name is Ethan Acre. I’m the head recruiter at ReminderMedia filling in for Luke today. I’m gonna give you guys my top three tactics that allowed me to interview and hire the top talent at ReminderMedia.

1. Follow the 80/20 rule

As the interviewer, you should listen 80% of the time, reserving the other 20% to ask probing, competency-based interview questions. If you dominate a conversation, you won’t learn what you need to know about the candidate.

2. Use a consistent measure

You need to take care that you are consistent across all your interviews. If you’re not, you can’t make a fair assessment from one candidate to the next. You need to make an apples-to-apples comparison. One of the things that I use to help me stay consistent is a grading sheet with the questions I want to ask. I ask every candidate the same questions and grade each response. I can compare responses across different interviews, or I can add up all the numbers and see which potential employee performed best.

It’s okay to be flexible in your conversation, but what do you learn if you ask one candidate, “What are your greatest strengths and greatest weakness?” and you ask another candidate, “What’s your favorite hobby?” There’s no basis for comparing their responses, so be consistent.

3. Be patient

Patience is key. Right? We have large hiring goals at ReminderMedia, and I sometimes struggle with waiting for the right candidate. I struggle with trying to find the best people today, but the key to successful hiring is not about today. It’s about engaging, networking, and building a book of quality talent. So when people are thinking hey, I need a job, the first place they think of is ReminderMedia. Patience is key in all of hiring.

The takeaway

So those are my three tips. I would encourage you to be active not passive and do what Luke always says, “Take action today!
