Are You Afraid to Be Your Best?
A Fear of Success Can Be as Detrimental to Achieving Your Goals as a Fear of Failure
Key idea: Many people enjoy basking in the light of their hard-won achievements, but there are others who are keenly aware of the downsides to success and fear its implications. Fortunately, there are ways to alleviate this anxiety and move forward.
It may seem odd that people can be afraid of success, but when you think about it—especially in light of psychology and human development—it makes sense.
Success inevitably requires change, and accepting change can be difficult for a lot of people. The same is true of growth. Where there is growth, there are unavoidable and sometimes frightening changes—whether it’s in the form of personal development, a career promotion, or business success.
Even for the best of us, change and growth are hard. The human brain is always looking for ways to maintain the status quo; we’re most comfortable with what’s familiar to us. So it’s understandable why some people resist their own achievements.
In this Silver Dollar episode of Stay Paid, we review this and other reasons experts offer for why some people have a fear of success. We look at the possible indicators of this fear, and while we don’t present ourselves as authorities on the subject, we also suggest ways to cope with and eventually overcome it. If you feel stuck, this is an episode that may provoke some introspection and point you in a new direction.
We hope you enjoy this episode and complete the action item Luke offers at the end. We’d also appreciate it if you took a moment to leave us a 5-star review and comment on Apple Podcasts. (We read them on air!) Thanks for listening!
