Becoming a REALTOR® is a giant leap of faith. If you ask any veteran agent, they’ll be able to recall the immense pressure that they felt at the inception of their career—no one is immune to it. While the percentage of failure within the first five years is quite high, quitting shouldn’t be a spur-of-the-moment decision. If you find yourself at a crossroad early in your career, and are doubting if you’re cut out for the industry, do these three things before you throw in the towel:

Take a step back.

We all know it’s impossible to make a rational decision while our emotions are high. That being said, it’s best to take a few steps back and clear your mind. Oftentimes, we get lost in the details and forget why we’re doing something. Try to jot down your vision statement and what compelled you to start a career in the first place. Understanding your “why” can help you determine which direction you should go.

Converse with your mentor.

In a previous blog, we discussed the importance of utilizing a mentor in the early stages of your real estate career, and can’t help but touch on it again. There’s no one better to take advice from during this time than someone who has previously walked in your shoes. Your mentor will offer both their unbiased opinion and some much-needed inspiration to help you determine which route you should take.

Reach back out.

At this point, there’s absolutely no shame in asking for referrals. In fact, calling to ask for referrals can be extremely beneficial for any agent—a novice or veteran—that’s struggling with prospecting. Pick up the phone, and put a call into those who know you and your competencies the best—current and past clients, prospects, and friends and family members. Even if it only leads to a few new leads, it’s better than where you started.

When it comes down to it, real estate isn’t for everyone, and only you know what’s best for yourself. Regardless of the decision you make, be proud of yourself for taking on an industry that is known for being the ultimate grind.
