Make These Types of Videos on Facebook

One of the biggest and to be honest, most frustrating, mysteries of the social media world is the Facebook algorithm. For those of you who don’t realize, Facebook utilizes secret algorithms to determine what any of their users see in their newsfeed at a given time. In layman’s terms, if you were to post, some of your friends might not even see it, unbeknownst to you. Which can make it pretty tricky when it comes to utilizing the platform for engagement purposes.

However, what we do know is that Facebook favors video content over shared plain-text content. But what factors should you consider when determining what types of videos to post?

  1. Longer version.
Since it’s a well-known fact that people have a short attention span, one would assume that short videos perform the best. Although that may be true from a viewer’s standpoint, Facebook thinks otherwise. They’ve stated that their algorithm will reward video makers who create longer clips. According to the platform, longer videos that are watched for an extended period will be given a priority in the ranking within the newsfeed. Meaning, if someone spends one minute on a four-minute video versus one minute on a two-minute video, the four-minute video will appear higher in the newsfeed.
  2. Live streaming.
In addition to longer videos, Facebook has stated that their algorithm will give preference to a video that is live over video that is not—cue Facebook Live. They have determined that people spend just as much time watching live videos as they spend watching other video content. So how do live videos affect the algorithm? According to Facebook, they have made a small update to the newsfeed so that when somebody goes live, their video will appear higher on the newsfeed than those that are not live, and their friends and followers will receive a notification.

Until the algorithm changes, which could happen when we least expect it, it’s clear that Facebook is favoring both longer-version and native videos. Happy recording!
